Engineering industry

Mechanic engineering is considered to be a priority of state policy of industrial development of the Republic of Karelia.

Leading enterprises of the Republic in the sphere are Onezhsky Shipbuilding Ltd, CJSC Petrozavodskmash, Onezhsky Tractor Plant Ltd.

Prospective development of Karelian shipbuilders is determined by the Shipbuilding Industry Development Strategy of the Russian Federation till 2020 and further on as well as the Federal Target Program “Development of Civil Marine Technology” for 2009-2016.

The main shipbuilding enterprise of the Republic of Karelia - Onezhsky Shipbuilding Company, in spite of reaching maximal production capacity in 2010 (4 ships per year), since late 2010 experienced certain tension related to the formation of the stock of orders and loading the shipbuilding facilities. But thanks to the orders of the new owner to build five oil tankers of “river-sea” class, the company managed to form the stock of orders for the nearest future. Besides, the new owner and company management are working on getting orders for building bulk-carrier ships, which are traditional of the Company, increase the number of planned oil tankers and expand the stock-list of produced vessels.

Today, the company is able to build ships up to 140 meters long, up to 16,5 meters wide and  light-ship up to 2300 tons.

The Company was qualified by the Russian Marine Register of Shipping, Russian River Register and German Lloyd.

The nearest perspective for the company is modernization and expansion of production facilities to allow building vessels up to 190 meters long and light-ship up to 3 000 tons.

Early in 2010, there was an integration project for CJSC Petrozavodskmash and State Corporation “Rosatom”, that became one of the key projects in recent years. As a result, in 2010 the total volume of shipped product from CJSC Petrozavodskmash increased by 2,3 times compared to 2009 level, and the orders from the State Corporation “Rosatom” accounted for 70% of the total amount of the order portfolio.

Activities of CJSC Petrozavodskmash in 2011 – 2015 plan to include implementation of the following projects:

- creation of facilities and increase production of equipment for the atomic industry of Russia;

- creation of resource-saving production for environmentally safe transport-and-package sets for storage and transportation of nuclear waste;

- technical re-equipment of the existing production facilities.

The scope of financing of these projects will amount to 4,9 billion RUR, and their realization will allow the company to:

- conduct profound technical re-equipment of the existing production facilities, including modernization of the equipment and purchasing of new, most advance and productive equipment;

- create new production facilities for processing of large-tonnage items including nuclear power station reactors;

- introduce new technology significantly increasing labor productivity as well as prestige and attractiveness of working at the enterprise;

- increase competitiveness of the company.

Besides that, CJSC Petrozavodskmash is planning to continue work on concluding long-term contracts for manufacturing products for traditional customers of the company – pulp and paper and petrochemical industries.

It is notable that CJSC Petrozavodskmash is creating a new workshop for making steam generator housings. Manufacturing and delivery of the first steam generator housing is planned for 2012. This will allow for expansion of the stock-list of products and increase of production volumes, and by 2014 produce the first nuclear locker.

Further development of the Onezhsky Tractor Plant Ltd. (OTZ) is connected with expansion of the equipment lineup and access to the new sales markets.

Thus, in 2009-2010 the company started assembling a universal multifunctional feller-delimber-buncher machine ΚΥ-451 (jointly with the Danish company “Silvatek”). The project is aimed at import replacement in this market segment and shows good potential.

To ensure efficient development of OTZ and organize assembly of new, modern and competitive harvesting machines, in 2010 work continued under contract with the Ministry of Industry and Trade of the Russian Federation for R&D work, constructive development and organization of manufacturing of modern machines such as: felling and packing machine, delimbing and bunching machine, timber loader. The contract provides for full production of the machines in 2012. At present, trial models have been assembled and are undergoing tests.

Besides that, the company is realizing the program for manufacturing cut-to-length harvesting machines. The program realization will allow by 2015 replace the production lineup: serially produced machines on the basis of TLT-100 will be completely replaced by the new machines based on the skidding tractor Onezhets-300.

This year in the Republic of Karelia, a new plant was put into operation  - unit repairing plant Zeppelin Rusland Ltd. The new plant is situated in Petrozavodsk.

Zeppelin Rusland, being a dealer of the world famous company Caterpillar producing different heavy-duty machines, has been successfully working in the European part of Russia for more than ten years and already has its branch in the Republic of Karelia (in Kostomuksha). At present, Zeppelin Rusland delivers machines for the mining, non-ferrous, construction, forest and other industries.

The work of the center is aimed at technical support for the whole North-Western region. Investment in the Karelian enterprise amounts for about 100 million RUR. They have already started repairing engines, transmissions, and gearboxes of the trucks working in the mines.

Metallurgy

Development of metallurgy in the Republic of Karelia is determined by the development perspectives of the leading metallurgic companies of the republic: branch of NAZ-SUAL and CJSC Vyartsilya Metalware.

The branch of NAZ-SUAL, part of the United Company RUSAL, to increase the share of product with high added value is implementing project for increasing production volumes of new,  more market-oriented type of product: alloys of aluminum-silicon group and aluminum – magnesium alloys in small ingots. The project provides for modernization in 2011-2012 of the casthouse with investment volume over 100 mln. RUR. Besides, the branch of NAZ-SUAL is realizing investment projects of environmental nature for equipment of the II electrolysis series with “dry gas purification” and construction of the solid industrial waste site with financing volume of about  1,5 billion RUR.

CJSC Vyartsilya Metalware (Company Group Mechel) produces metalware including low carbon, electrode and construction wire, galvanized nails, and wire mesh with polymer cover of rolled wire and is the only company in the country producing hot galvanized nails.

In 2011, within the framework of the technical re-equipment program, assortment diversifying and increase of production volumes, CJSC Vyartsilya Metalware is planning to install an additional thin wire-drawing machine 630/7. This will allow for expansion of the stock-line and increase production capacity of the company by 2%.

Besides, the company plans in 2011-2017 to build a water-treatment facility for the steel wire workshop with reconstruction of the etching department that will produce a positive environmental effect.

Chemical industry

CJSC “NITRO SIBIR Nord Group”, to satisfy the growing demand for explosives among the customers of “Sibirit-3”, is planning in 2013 to build in Kostomuksha a workshop for producing cartridge emulsion explosives (business idea). Investment is supposed to amount to about 30 mln RUR and production volume increase by 2015 will be over 10 %.
