The goal of the project: construction of a quarry and a mining and beneficiation complex on Kotozersky occurrence of anorthosites.
Project description: exploration of Kotozersky anorthosites occurrence is to be conducted through open pit by cycle process scheme with drilling and blasting and external location of overburden rocks.
Location of the object: Kotozersky anorthosites occurrence is situated in Louhsky district on the northern coast of Nizhnee Kotozero Lake, 2 km far from Kotozero railway station.
Estimated quartz resources, calculated by P1+P2 categories 50 meters in depth, account for 79.3 million tons.
Basic parameters of Kotozersky anorthosites quarry
Gradual exploitation of the deposit is estimated:
The first stage involves detailed field appraisal of the deposit and incidental pilot mining of anorthosites. The amount of mined rock mass is estimated at the level of 50-100 thousand tons per year. Processing of mined mass is to be conducted on module crushing-and-screening plant.
Further stages include industrial exploration, putting into operation of a benefication plant, expanding mined rocks capacities up to 200 and more thousand tons per year.
Two variants of ore dressing are possible:
- installation of crushing equipment on the pit,
- crushing shop is inclined in the structure of a preconcentration factory.
If ore is crushed on the pit, stationary crushing equipment is used.
According to the second variant ore goes from transitory run of mine stockpile to a benefication plant, which consists of two separate shops:
- crushing,
- beneficating.
Anorthosites benefication technology has been worked out by the Institute of Geology of the Karelian Scientific Center of the Russian Academy of Sciences in macro laboratory conditions, taking into consideration possible fields of usage.
Spot of the occurrence situated in the central part on the area of P1 resources assessment is recommended for primary mining. It is characterized by clear manifestations of grey weakly altered anorthosites, which have lens-shaped body (picture 2). Thickness of overburden rocks is minimal at the spot, not exceeding 1 meter.
Measurements of primary mining spot are: 600 meters long, average thickness is 200m, mining depth – 25m. P1 category resources comprise 7.8 million tons.
Rocks’ composition within the chosen spot is continuous.
The amount of mined mass, depending on exploration stage, can be the following:
- up to 100 thousand tons per year,
- 100-200 thousand tons per year,
- more than 200 thousand tons per year.
Geological resources in P1 category area are to provide for quarry operating for not less than 78 years (including mining loses in open-pit sides) in case of crushing-and-screening plant productivity by parent stock of up to 100,000 tons per year. In case of productivity gain up to 200,000 tons per year, resources are to provide for 39 years life of the quarry; in case of 250,000 tons per year output – 30 years of life, including factual possibility to increase resources.
The following objects and facilities are to be placed:
- a quarry and spoil dumps of overburden rocks,
- industrial site with crushing-and-screening plant and ancillary facilities,
- haulage roadway and vehicle access road,
- a railway, connecting industrial site with railroad junction,
- pit roads,
- networks and facilities for providing the enterprise with electric energy, water supply and water removal, heat and fuel supply.
Taking into account mining and geological conditions of the occurrence, its exploration is to be conducted through open pit by cycle process scheme with 2-3 benches.
Project readiness stage:
Laboratory investigations on usage of anorthosites for producing plastics filler, sorbents, dry pack mortars, paint materials, etc, were conducted within “Technological evaluation of anorthosites of Louhsky district as building materials, raw material for technologic fiber, ceramics, paint, plastics fillers, etc” research work.
