Extraction and benefication of quartz material of Melomais area (Kalevalsky district of the Republic of Karelia)

The goal of the project: construction of a quarry and a mining and beneficiation complex in Melomais area of quartz rocks.
Project description: exploration of Malomais quartz reef is to be conducted through open pit by cycle process scheme with drilling and blasting and external location of overburden rocks.
Location of the object: Malomais quartz reef is situated in Kalevalsky district, 38 km far from Kostomuksha.
Estimated quartz resources, calculated by P2 category 20 meters in depth, account for 7.2 million tons.
Basic parameters of Malomais quarry of quartz rocks
Taking into account the level of knowledge on the occurrence gradual exploitation is needed:
The first stage involves detailed field appraisal of the quartz reef and incidental pilot mining. The amount of mined rock mass is estimated at the level of 5,000 tons per year, what provides for production of concentrated quartz grit:
- Quartz of deep concentration not less than - 1.53 thousand tons per year,
- Quartz for production of industrial silica – 2.08 thousand tons per year,
- Flint for ceramics – 0.66 thousand tons per year.
Further stages iclude industrial exploration and expanding mined rocks capacities. Construction of following objects, sites and roads is needed:
- a quarry;
- spoil dumps of overburden rocks;
- automobile roads (vehicle access, pit roads);
- industrial site;
- buildings and auxiliary facilities;
- networks and facilities for providing the enterprise with electric energy.
Two variants of ore dressing are possible:
- installation of crushing equipment on the pit,
- crushing shop is inclined in the structure of a preconcentration factory.
If ore is crushed on the pit, stationary crushing equipment with mechanic life more than 5 years is used, or instead of it displaceable crushing screening plants, deployed at industrial site. Crushed ore is collected to a transitory run of mine stockpile, later it is shipped to benefication shop by motor transport.
According to the second variant after scarifying quartz goes to a benefication plant, which consists of two separate shops:
- crushing,
- beneficating.
Enterprise capacity (raw material processing):
Project readiness stage: Laboratory investigations on concentrating of nonconventional types of quartz material of Melomais and other quartz reefs were conducted within “Design of technologies of benefication of nonconventional types of quartz material of Louhsky and Kalevalsky districts for producing high-purity quartz heads: innovative approaches and solutions” (2008) research work. Flow diagrams of quartz material benefication with output of quartz products of different qualities were worked out.
